My theory is that with his primitive equipment, Jebediah Morningside somehow opened the portal to the alien planet with sound waves in the 1860's. Then the aliens from the heavy gravity, desert planet, turned Jebediah Morningside into The Tall Man by injecting the yellow stuff into him. The Tall Man was then controlled by the aliens to rob dead human bodies from the Morningside Cemetery and turn them into dwarf slaves by using Jebediah Morningside's embalming equipment to fill them with the yellow stuff.

NO, wait. How did Mike manage to interact with the past if it's almost "another dimension", as pointed out lately in the movie? (when they try to stop Morningside from trespassing the Portal/Gate). I'm puzzled and confused now. I was thinking that Jody tricked him and took him to a "parallel plane" where he could not interact with Jebediah. Wheras, when The Tall Man sent Michael back, he knew he wold be no threat to Jebediah that time. Like he said, something like "you go where I want you to go."

Keep in mind that the red planet is not in this universe we know. It has nothing to do with physical space we look up at in amazement. Its something different and apart from physical space we know of.

I think that once Jebediah walked through the gate, he was finished. Discovered and totally unprepared for what he encountered, I suspect that after he was killed, his memories/knowledge were placed into the recesses of a predominated sphere (one that already had a sentient being in it). His memories were just a database to be dominated by some entity, one that was housed into the form of Jebediah and is now what we call The Tall Man.
On a related note...It takes some of the awe and mystique away to think that The Tall Man is nothing more than high level member of some interstellar / para-dimensional mafia where they deal in the trafficking of sentient beings (one hypothesis was slavery...).
Not a godlike entity, but a "Michael" (albeit an exceedingly more powerful one) from "A Boy And His Dog"
