I must admit that Phantasm and Phantasm 2 ,in some small part, inspired me to pursue a career in funeral service. Much satisfaction is received in helping people through their most difficult time. Although, I would love nothing more than to give someone the old shoulder slap and "The funeral is about to begin, sir." Anyway, I would like to know if there are any other funeral director members?

I worked in a funeral home for 3.5 years. Did removals and some prep. I am also a Certified Crematory Operator.

Respriators? We never wore them, unless it was a horid decomp.
I had headaches for about the first week I worked there.
Kristen, did you ever have the chance to use Phenol? Now that's some interesting stuff.

See, folks... don't you just love this discussion???
I do!
The Phenol we had was in a liter sized glass bottle nestled into vermiculite which was in a sealed metal tube and that was inside of another box, SUPER BAD STUFF. We had to get a permit for it alone, it works wonders on skin slip though.
Anyone who says that formaldehyde doesn't cause cancer is oblivious. The only "work" I was allowed to perform on a case was dressing, cosmetics, touch-ups and the like, since I was not licensed. But of couse there were loop holes with everything, the firm I worked for had an apprentice program, which meant that you could do everything as long as someone licensed was in the room, and when you work for a big firm, there are people everywhere.
Have you heard of the Neptune Society? Really cool stuff! They are based out of Ft. Lauderdale. They have an underwater cremation garden, it's quite stunning.

WOW!! It is great to hear there are other people who entered funeral service buy way of Phantasm! I am a funeral director/embalmer who has been in funeral service 14 years now. I don't honestly know what else I would be doing. My apprenticeship was served at an old southern colonial home that had been converted to a funeral home. It really had that P2 feel to it. The preparation room was very similar as was the casket display room. I often felt somewhat like Mark Major's mortician character minus the sphere. Anyway, I really enjoyed the "shop talk" from others in funeral service and am glad I could start a colorful and somewhat morbid thread.

I got to "help out" with a few embalmings and a few funerals. Just 2 weeks ago, I got to ride in the hearse, pick up a body, load into the hearse, unload at service, reload back into hearse and drive to the crematory, unload, put into freezer unit to await cremation. What a creepy place that was and right in an industrial park! Weird! Of course not as weird as stabbing a corpse with a trocar and sucking up all their bodily fluids as I got to do!
