I did a thread search so I don't think this is a repeat, if it is any mod is welcome to delete it.
What is your favorite Phantasm? Vote and respond with why.
My favorite is P2. This was the first one I saw when I was a tike. I owe my love for the series to my Mom for allowing me to see this movie and fall head over heels for the series. It wasn't until close to ten years after P2 came out that I saw P1during a film marathon on TCM during Halloween , P3 shortly after hit the video stores.

Phantasm III: Lord Of The DeadI DON'T like Phantasm 2 at all, since James LeGros is an imposter. Imposter in the sense that he played the part of Mike, instead of AMB?

I agree, it is wierd to watch the 4 films and deal with that oddness of P2. I still want to see a picture of AMB when he was about 19, just to get an idea what he would look like playing that part.

It took years before I was able to accept P2 for what it was...LeGros seemed like a decent actor but was in the unfortunate predicament of inheriting a role "created" by a unique actor.
Now, after a good stretch of time has passed, I can really enjoy the film and its very different tone and atmosphere. And LeGros' Mike is just fine.

Phantasm 2 will always hold a special place for me because it is the one that got me into the series.
However the original Phantasm will always be my favorite. It's just the whole vibe of that movie I love.

I voted for the original Phantasm. It's the one that started it all. There would be no Phantasm without it. It starts the whole story off and is a true classic.

My favorite is still PIII because it layed down the current ground rules of the phandom, showed that Reggie was a hero, Mike is more than a victim, Jody is a specter, the tall man is more than a boogeyman, and that there are others who can fight him. Not to mention it had arguably the best sets, props, and effects of the series!

It's easily the original for me. It's just got a special magic and charm... it keeps it simple. Plus there are a thousand other reasons.

Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead My favourites usually fluctuate among the first three films but for the past year or so, Phantasm III has been my favourite. LOTD & Briggs pretty much share the same ways I like it as well. It's also the first Phantasm movie that I ever saw around the time of its release in 1994 so it has a special place. PS There is already a poll similar to this but I don't think it's a big deal. At that time, Phantasm II was my favourite so it's good to see an updated list(if anyone else's favourite ever changes).

i voted part 2. that can change time to time but even without Michael Baldwin i love the action, effects, new soundtrack and i still dig how Paula Irvine looked back then. plus that was when Regman started to kick serious butt.

PHANTASM........Is and always will be far and above all the rest!!! It is obviously the superior film. It holds VERY special memories in time for me too. But that has nothing to do with it. P1 is just clearly the better film.

Well, seeing as how I've only seen part 1...I'll have to go with that.
From what I understand, though...the sequels are radically different from the original--that the first one is "hallucenigenic horror", while the rest are more "action/horror".
True?

I disagree. While P2 is the most linear and "Hollywood" of the series, P3 and P4 have many qualities of the first film. P4 is the most saturated with "trippy" ideas and questions, questions, questions. I HIGHLY recommend watching P4, if you had to pick just one out that you have not seen.

I have always said, P2 & P3 were better than no Phantasm at all, but only P1 & P4 get my PHANTASM seal of approval.

They all have their own flaws. I think that once P4 was released, P3 became more acceptable. I still don't care for the Zombies. Other than that P3 is cool with me. P2 is my favorite out of the series. Yet another reason Phantasm is amazing, it has something for everyone. We can all bicker on which one is superior, but at the end of the day we are all here for the same reason.

Eventually, I plan to give them all a shot.
But, I saw the first one about a year ago for the first time when I blindly purchased the Special Edition DVD, and that experience has stuck with me ever since.
There are only a handfull of movies that have had this effect on me....and Don Coscarelli is responsible for two of them!
And, I got into that first flick, Kenny & Co....without knowing who made it. I enjoyed the crap out of it for what it was--and that's the sign of a great film maker.
As for the original Phantasm, I was probably a little biased going into it. But, I still dug the uniqueness of it. It was surreal. Although it was about 2PM when I watched it, it made me feel like it was 4AM, and that I had been up for a couple of days, while I it was playing. It had this oddness...a quality about it that I can't put my finger on.
It deserves its spot right up there with Tobe Hooper and Wes Craven's stuff in the atmospheric horror department! ;D

I think you will enjoy the sequels.
The original is what started it all. I like the overall look of the film, from the spheres to the cars to the ladies, everything. It is an extremely distancing film. By that I mean that it takes you out of your "comfort zone" and puts you where it is. The aura of the film speaks volumes, and a lot of that has to do with Myrow/Seagrave's music and Coscarelli's imagination. My favorite visual from the original is the very first sphere suckin action. Very powerful and inventive.
