I have never been out west or to one of these types of things. I was wondering since stars are buried there where exactly do the people sit at I'm assuming not on the graves themselves?
I love the concept though of having a showing of a film like Phantasm in a graveyard though it so perfectly fits the mood of the film.

It's being projected onto the side of a Mauso, so I'm guessing that people will be lying with the dead

It's now midnight and I'm home, picking cemetery grass blades out of my clothes!
Guy and I arrived just as the gates were opening... to find ourselves in a VERY long line of cars lined up along Santa Monica Blvd. and cruising slowly through the immense iron gates of Hollywood Forever. Additionally, there were dozens of people walking down the sidewalk, carrying lawn chairs and picnic baskets, joining a very long line of people being herded through the front gates. I couldn't believe the turnout for this event!
We drove all around the cemetery until we finally were directed to park the car by security guards. We were right before the white plain wall of one of the mausoleum buildings on the immense grounds--what would obviously become tonight's "screen." Music was already blaring from nearby speakers. Hundreds of people were camped out on the grass, their blankets and lawnchairs set up along with lavish picnic dinners, votive candles, coolers filled with wine or beer. We seated ourselves upon a large expanse of grass which likely was reserved to become plots in the distant future. To the sides and behind us were magnificent family mini-mausoleums and lofty palm trees. Dozens of swans from several of the cemetery lakes took flight into the twilight sky.
I took a brief stroll to view the crowd and look for any familiar faces. The first person I ran into was Reggie Bannister, clean shaven, ponytail, and looking as great as ever! He gave me a warm smile and buddy hug. Next, I greeted Gigi. Reg was now being hit up for autographs. I asked if he'd be performing tonight but he told me the event was tightly run, no chance of live performance, alas.
Minutes later, Don arrived, dressed all in black and looking taller than ever. He gave me a large smile and warm hug. Following behind him was Angus. It was nice to share a gentle hug and a few moments in private talking with Angus. With his designer glasses and short hair, most folks didn't seem to recognize him at first. He looked a little befuddled as to where he could put his lawn chair, and whether the evening would turn chill. (Doubtful in August.) He was dressed in a smart gray suit, but had none of the Tall Man's on screen menace in real life. Finally, I got the most excited, delighted greeting from Kat Lester, who looks even more gorgeous than on film. Her eyes were glowing with delight, and she had her daughter snap a pic of us together (very flattering). By now, several people had descended on the cast for autographs and photos. I ducked through the crowd and headed back to my area on the lawn with Guy.
People were still pouring in. The lawn was virtually one mass of blankets and (live) bodies. My jaw dropped as I looked around us. Guy chuckled and likened the event to "The Phantasm Woodstock." Very apt, especially as we sniffed the fumes of marijuana from nearby! All types of people were gathered here, many wearing "Phantasm" T-shirts, others looking very Goth. I had my "I LUV Tall Man" button on (thank you, Dustin!). I got a kick out of the sphere blades coming out of the heart symbol.
Dusk was descending and a slide show of old horror film posters was entertaining. Clapping and a roar of appreciation went up as the "Phantasm" poster appeared on the wall. At that moment, the music subsided and the host of the evening proudly told the audience this was his favorite of all horror films.
Don was the first up, greeting the audience proudly and joking about tonight's World Mausoleum Premiere. A quip was made about screening it to so many stiffs--that is, the people "behind" us. We all laughed. Don also repeated Guy's apt description of this screening being a Woodstock of Phantasm. Coscarelli was very pleased with the turnout.
Next up was Kat Lester, vivacious, full of laughter and joy. She also made some jokes about the setting, and admitted how thrilled she was to be there.
Then came Angus, striding into the spotlight much like the Tall Man down Main Street. His voice was powerful, commanding, yet warm. He told us how he had come to Los Angeles in 1943 with his family. He'd gotten work here as a fountain boy at RKO studios nearby. He'd been fired one ill-fated afternoon when he suggested to the chef that they serve leafy green vegetables instead of the standard fare of starchy foods like potatoes and corn. Heartbroken, the young actor-to-be trudged home through this very cemetery, unknowing of the fame that fate would bring him decades later. Now here he was, back at the very same cemetery where all his family were interred. He chuckled with both humor and a bit of sadness as he termed this a "family reunion." Not only with his own family, but with all of us, old and new phans alike. His speech was very touching.
Finally, up came Reggie, full of energy and good cheer. He announced that we would now be doing a trivia contest. Winners would get free autographed P4 DVD's. The questions were funny. "What color dress does the Lady in Lavender wear?" And... Finish this question, "Warning shots are ______." We were all laughing. I didn't see many people running up front with their answers, though. It was awkward trying to manuever around and over all the bodies, especially in the darkness.
I suspect that Paul Pepperman was hanging around too. Though I didn't spot him, his autographed miraculously appeared on someone's "Phantasm" one sheet...
Before we knew it, night had fallen. There on the darkened wall appeared the glowing red letters "PHANTASM." The sound system was awesome. As was the picture quality of the film. Guy and I kept looking at one another in amazement. We were seeing "Phantasm" in a CEMETERY... I kept staring up at the stars overhead, the half moon in Scorpio, brilliant Jupiter in Sagittarius. Then glancing around at the silent, stately family tombs. This was incredible... Guy whispered, "I can't believe I'm not dreaming!" And that, truly, was what "Phantasm" was all about. Was this real or just a dream?
The audience was perfection. Laughing at all the jokes. Really caught up in the magic of the film. The flickering votives and candles around added an eerie touch to the atmosphere. A guy nearby chugged on a bottle of amber Dos Equis. Guy and I popped Tootsie-Roll lollipops into our mouths during the Main Street scene, chuckling mirthfully together at our "Rocky Horror" antics. Silly, but so much fun!
We shared a blanket as a slight chill descended, a soft breeze playing over our faces from time to time. The weather couldn't have been more perfect. And the breeze made me grin as the spacegate hum rose steadily in pitch and octave, winds buffeting the mausoleum and the doomed Reggie... I stared in awed at the Tall Man's macabre "salute" with bloody stiletto. And wondered if Angus was still on the grounds...
Before we knew it, the film's credits were rolling. We quickly gathered out belongings and joined the mob heading towards cars and the mighty front gates. Driving home, Guy and I were so exhilarated to have experienced such an event. What a night to remember!
I wish you all could have been there with us.
Pleasant dreams, friends.

Kristen couldn't have written a more poetic, beautiful description of our evening together! I echo her sentiments! It WAS a screening of Phantasm I will NEVER forget! And I'm so happy to have experienced it with my dear friend. I got a photo of myself with Don, Angus, and Reggie. Kat was still signing autographs! I'll try to post a photo at some point or have Kristen do it for me, as my computer is gettin' mighty old.
