Fango friend Angus Scrimm got in touch with us on the eve of Anchor Bay’s DVD release of PHANTASM IV: OBLIVION (coming August 26), to talk about his upcoming movies and the fate of The Tall Man. First off, the actor admits that fans awaiting a new PHANTASM should not be holding their breath. “There is nothing in the works,” he tells us. “We did have a roundtable reading a year and a half ago of a lengthy script for PHANTASM V, which was written by Steve Romano, the co-writer on Don’s excellent MASTERS OF HORROR episode INCIDENT ON AND OFF A MOUNTAIN ROAD. The problem with that one was that it attempted to explain everything, and of course, nothing is really explicable with PHANTASM,” he laughs.
Still, the franchise’s followers should not be in total despair, as Scrimm reveals. “I am told that Anchor Bay might be doing a silver sphere release over here,” he says—referring to the British DVD boxed set of all four movies, plus a bonus disc, which has been a popular import for U.S. collectors. “However, it might just be three of the films in the U.S. set, because Universal is still hanging tough on PHANTASM II. They want a lot of money to put it out. So it doesn’t look as if that will be in there.”
In the meantime, Scrimm will be seen soon in a couple of promising terror tales, both from Scareflix producer Larry Fessenden. “I have just done a movie called SATAN HATES YOU, which is pretty raw,” he says of the James Felix McKenney movie we last covered here. “It’s a great idea, about a particularly crazy Christian movement. I play a televangelist whose mission is to save the soul of this young girl, who is on a downward spiral. It is my intention to ‘save her’ before she dies.
“I also have I SELL THE DEAD coming up—a picture about graverobbing, oddly enough [laughs]. Dominic Monaghan, from the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, and Larry play two body stealers, and I’m this old doctor who buys the corpses. My character doesn’t care where these dead people come from—just as long as they come to him! That film is going to be very good, and the PHANTASM fans should love it.” See our last item on I SELL THE DEAD here, and keep your eyes on Fango’s pages for more on both movies. —Calum Waddell
