I've always sort of maintained that even if P5 never got made, I'd be perfectly fine with how Oblivion ended.
And in a lot of ways, I still feel that way. It's not like the series will be somehow tarnished or not as good because a fifth wasn't made.
But at the same time, I honestly think a Phantasm V is necessary, and the main reason why I think this is because while I'm all for not having all the answers laid out for me, not nearly enough was revealed.
For example...
1. Why was there a sphere in Mike's head? What was the purpose/meaning of this? Why did the Tall Man want it so badly?
2. What happens to Reg after he chases the Tall Man through the gate at the end of P4?
3. No one's story gets even remotely resolved. We have a dead/dying Mike laying on the desert floor, we don't know if Jody is good or bad, Reggie could be in limbo for all we know, and the Tall Man's intentions are never really revealed. There's no brotherly resolution either. Mike and Jody NEED to be close again, just like P1.
4. What the hell is this bag plague? What's the point of it ever showing up or being mentioned?
5. We never get a good look at the Red Planet. We don't know much about it at all really.
6. Why is the Tall Man shipping off dwarfs to be slaves on the Red Planet? And furthermore, why does he seem to give up on this entirely after P1/P2?
7. We don't know how or why Jeb Morningside becomes the Tall Man. Is he really an alien? Or is he Jeb transformed?
8. What was the purpose of the dream sequence showing Mike as the Tall Man?
9. Why was the Tall Man after Mike to begin with? Just for the sphere in his head? If so, see number 1.
10. There are a thousand other unanswered questions that could go here!
So there, 10 solid reasons (minus the last one) why a Phantasm V is necessary in my opinion. And no, I'm not saying everything should be answered. But some of the things I listed NEED to be.
What do you guys think? Agree? Disagree? What are some things that warrant the making of P5?

I disagree to agree to disagree.
I understand your frustration on all of those points. The one that flat out pisses me off is the bag plague idea.
That is 9 solid reasons for a Phantasm V, and while I could come up with some tanigble excuse for them, I won't. Perhaps it because deep, deep down inside, even as much as I love Oblivion, I really lament the fact that it creates some very large holes in the series. I.E. the ole' bag plague. I love the Wilshire Blvd. scene, but I hate it at the same time. It hints at something we know nothing about, something that was never discussed or brought into the scene. We could go on and on about the ending of Oblivion. I relate it to Heaven, everyone sees it in a different light. As for Jeb Morningside, we are "supposed" to assume that he goes through that fork and is taken somewhere, probably the red planet, and turned by some alien being into The Tall Man. While that may be an okay explanation, I would like the film to address it more. The sphere in Mike's head? Well, I have a theory on that.
I'm going to say this, and I will probably get flamed for it.... Seriously, Oblivion cost $600K, in Hollywood talk that is chump change. Don needs to make Bubba 2 and that John flick, take some of his cash and invest in a P5. Go straght to DVD, that's where the cash is for stuff like this. I really think that Don has some grudge against the Phantasm series. I don't think that he enjoys the fact that when people talk to him, it's mostly what they talk about.
There's my .02

2. What happens to Reg after he chases the Tall Man through the gate at the end of P4? It would be cool if Reg stumbled upon a "nest" of tall men and reg killed them all

The idea of a "nest" of Tall Men really is not too far fetched. There has to be some sort of regenerating stock of Tallys somewhere. Quite an interesting idea.

There are a lot of questions, questions that will probably remain unanswered if PV comes through. ;D The biggest problem I've had with not accepting PIV as the conclusion is the fact it did not seem like a conclusion. Reg jumping into the spacegate with Mike screaming he'll die is a conclusion, the gate being destroyed, sucking the gold sphere into a vortex is a conclusion, Reggie jumping into the gate to hunt the tall man forever does not sound like an intended conclusion to me . I stand by my opinion that there definitely should be a fifth part and I will continue wishing until Don himself confirms it will never happen.

The biggest problem I've had with not accepting PIV as the conclusion is the fact it did not seem like a conclusion. Reg jumping into the spacegate with Mike screaming he'll die is a conclusion, the gate being destroyed, sucking the gold sphere into a vortex is a conclusion, Reggie jumping into the gate to hunt the tall man forever does not sound like an intended conclusion to me . Exactly. But Phantasm IV wasn't totally intended to be the final movie either, but Don wasn't sure if it would be the last so he ended it with a vague sense of finality. But I've stated before that Phantasm IV was basicly the calm before the storm, but no storm ever came...at least not yet. Oblivion is deffinately a good movie and was kinda mythical but I am deffinately not content at all with it being the final Phantasm. In a final movie I would personally like to see a more difinative enfing; maybe not total closure, but the vast majority of the case shut. You could argue that this is "un-Phantasm" but the fact of the matter is is that it became a franchise. The ending to the first is fine but if your gonna take it all the way to Movie #4 and end it the same way save the added drama just seems kinda obnoxious. The ending wasn't bad but it's just.... Actually, I had a discussion with Gabaldon (the guy who made the Phantasm Timeline on the Achives) about wether Phantasm IV: Oblivion was a satisfying conclusion. We were very critical but noted plenty good about it and other chipped in and it was a great discussion, heres the link: www.imdb.com/title/tt0138703/board/flat/97854523?p=1*user name ZeldaFan2929

if V isn't made it's going to be a major dissapointment. IV could never be a proper ending.

I love the Wilshire Blvd. scene, but I hate it at the same time. It hints at something we know nothing about hey Oblivion...isn't that where jody says "we can't stay long...there's a risk of infection" I think it will happen...and really as i've said on forums since 99' i'm rather easy to please as long as there is The Cast, The Cuda The 4 barrell and spheres I'm basically good to go I think if there is a 5th one, it will be very good. and hopefully have closure.

I suppose we can/have debate forever about the fifth film, had part 4 been in any way conclusive we probably wouldn't be so in depth with all of this. The points that GIH listed at the beginning of this thread are pretty much right on and as he said, even if they all weren't answered that would be ok.
I also hope that Don doesn't have any grudge against the series - as was mentioned, I never thought about this really and can't imagine that being the case.
I was happy to hear Reg say on the dvd documentary that there may be several pictures made and it was "epic" in scale, not sure who said that or what changed but it would've been awesome. Last comment, for me the biggest problem with the series really starts from the beginning of part 3 and that first they are going after the tall man, then they are running from him, and this back and forth is really annoying. Reg even has a short conversation with him (grenade scene) and they then just go their seperate ways!

Well the Tall Man had no real choice there Reg had a grenade and was gonna blow them up "I don't want him in Pieces" - Tall Man I'm curious as to what he wants with Mike...to no end lol. I just re-listened to A.Micheal Baldwins podcast not sure if he was sarcastic but..he said they filmed the cast reading with 3 cam's ... so maybe we can get a few more teaser clips I also hope someone will pick this up and make it happen i mean if Witchcraft can get ten movies...why shouldn't we get 5?
