Well yeah it wasn't the first time we've had Zombies but these Zombies were just goofy. i think that sums it up well. if the zombies were more serious or just angry/deadpan i would have loved it more when i saw it the first time. just a wee bit too much comedy. i love it now but that and how ghetto Rocky sounded is what threw me off. she just didn't sound authentic and the dialogue a bit forced.

Yeah, the comedy is what threw me off. You didn't see the three amigos goofing around the way they did before they died. They were just serious in wanting to kill Tim. After they died, they seemed to be having a blast chasing Reg, Rocky, and Tim in the car chase scene.

I guess it works for some people but P3 is my least fav Phantasm just due to the goofyness of the zombies and I just couldn't stand Tim or Rocky.

This is a bit random but is Phantasm III-related. I was watching Raw Deal earlier & noticed Brooks Gardner playing an elevator operator that Arnold Schwarzenegger bribed to get into a club. Brooks was NOT wearing his dollar sign gold necklace nor was he a zombie. His throat wasn't slashed with a razorblade-adorned frisbee either.

I thought the zombies were silly, but that was kind of the point. They were intended as splat-stick comedy relief, and the dark humour is one of the things I love about P3. Not everyone's cup of tea, I guess. I think the zombies were basically gravers minus masks, or dwarfs not shrunk/debrained (same thing probably). The cop in IV was one of the same "species" of minion as PIII's zombies.
So the Tall Man's minions are as follows:
Dwarves: Bodies of the dead shrunk down with brains removed, then reanimated.
Gravers: Bodies of the dead, with brain preserved, reanimated by the Tall Man. Face replaced with a gas mask.
Spheres: Contain the brains removed from dwarves.
Zombies: The tall man's quickest and easiest solution. Bodies of the dead, sometimes with damaged or substandard brains, reanimated hastily without shrinking.
Mutants (Monster Liz, Thing in the Trunk, etc.): Grotesque undead works of art created by the Tall Man for the purposes of intimidation and mental/physical torture.
Possibly there are other varieties I have missed, or we haven't seen yet.

I just didn't get the comedy aspect of them is all. The ones in P1 which you breifly saw and the others were serious and all.
Maybe it was just the type of people they were that made them goofy Zombies lol ;D

I often wondered why the Tall Man would reanimate them? I don't recall him doing this with any other bodies during the course of the other films. Why not turn them into Gravers or something and send them after Reggie and the Gang or even a Demon like we saw in P4. He reanimated Tommy, but of coarse shrunk him first, the same with Liz's grandma

The biggest issue I have with Tim's father pulling his mother into the casket deals with continuity. He is at the wrong end of the casket! They must have had to saw off the lip inbetween the two lids. Every time I see that scene it gets to me. Also, I know this is off topic, but in P2 when the "Mortician" is hammering up the cremains... who does that? Didn't they have pulverizers back in '87? Sorry to rant, some of the funeral stuff gets to me.
Okay so the zombies for me were quite annoying. I think they were too goofy. A scene that pops into my head is when the J Sphere pops onto that guys head and starts spinning exorcist style. You hear him making those stupid sounds ended with that WHOWWWWWW! I do like what reg says to the older one (Rufus?) before he blows his head off with the quad.

[IF] If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you But make allowance for their doubting too, If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don't deal in lies, Or being hated, don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream--and not make dreams your master, If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breath a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you; If all men count with you, but none too much, If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds' worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!
--Rudyard Kipling

It is really quite nice.
I was checking out your MySpace, the drawing you did of Reg & Mike's fireside chat is awesome! You should totally do all of the sketches from Liz's diary in P2.
