I don't really understand the CRITICISM surrounding the Zombies... after all - technically speaking - the Dwarves are zombies (Living Dead) too.
The Zombies in 'Phantasm III' are a variant of the Lurkers. Indeed, you can consider them as being a more decadent, rotting version of the Lurkers. Another variant is the Demon Trooper.
I don't really see anything wrong in the slapstick comedy you mentioned... because it wasn't "slapstick" at all. It was MACABRE comedy, to begin with. 'PHANTASM III' is full of blood and gore, so I think this MACABRE comedy kinda counterbalances everything.
'Phantasm III' is a magnificent movie, anyway. Flawless.

P1 = nothing quite goofy. P2 = " " " P3 = goofy zombies P4 = amazing mind-bending material (minus zombie trooper, which was a few minutes compared to the zombies in P3 being stretched out throughout the film)
The zombies in P3 just don't mesh with the rest of the series. They were rather useless.

The zombie criticism in Phantasm III reminds me so much of people that dismiss Halloween III because of Michael Myers isn't in it...in that both are tired arguments & some of the main reasons why people don't like either movie. Yawn. Phantasm III: Still my favourite in the series.

I love Halloween 3, it's my favorite (besides the original) of the series. Perhaps I adore the movie so much because I was younger and it just captivated me. That is probably the same reason I love P2 so much, I saw the movie when I was 5. I love P3 besides the zombies in the same way that I love P4 besides the demon cop. It is completly possible to love a movie without loving everything in the movie.

I love all four on the same level, and that's because they are so unique and different from each other. Pure magic.
The Zombies... they fit into the Phantasm groove very well.

I thought you hadn't yet seen Oblivion? I just watched the first 10 minutes of Oblivion, but the poor Spanish dubbing pissed me off. 10 minutes are enough to "grasp" the tone and the vibe of a movie, believe me.

Loved the zombies because like every other movie in the series you never know what Mike & Reggie are gonna encounter from The Tall Man's bag of counterpunches.

Loved the zombies because like every other movie in the series you never know what Mike & Reggie are gonna encounter from The Tall Man's bag of counterpunches. And that is one reason why this is my favorite series ;D . In case no one's said it yet, welcome to the boards, by the way!
