What is Don Coscarelli Working On? Source: Twitter October 20, 2010
So, Don Coscarelli recently took to Twitter to spew his thoughts and update his fans on a regular basis. And today, he drummed up speculation with the following post:
"Pre-production begins."
Within the last day he announced he was at work writing something from an "undisclosed location." The director followed his "pre-production" status update with a post that reads "Most only ride in a hearse once. Some are luckier," with a link that takes you to Nationalhearse.net, more specifically, the link features a hearse adorned with the image of Phantasm's Tall Man.
Whether his last update and his update about "being in pre-production" share a connection is unknown. But you can start guessing as to what he's at work on. Phantasm 5? Bubba Nosferatu? John Dies at the End?
Regarding a Phantasm sequel, Coscarelli told the L.A. Times around this time last year: "It's something we've talked about through the years but the timing hasn't worked out or getting the finances exactly right. I've been cooking up a couple of incarnations of things that I can't talk about now but hopefully in the near future we could get something in the Phantasm world happening."Source: www.shocktilyoudrop.com/news/topnews.php?id=16953Oh, Don. Please....please announce Phantasm 5.

The mere prospect of a Phantasm 5 has greatly improved a pretty crappy week. Nothing against a Bubba Ho-Tep 2, but news of any other movie will leave me greatly disappointed!

He's starting to get quite a bit of tweet followers. I hope he's not stringing us along. I feel like parking in front of Don or Angus's house and see where they go every day...jk...don't want you to think I'm some kind of psycho

Phans, I'm afraid it's not Phantasm V.: www.shocktillyoudrop.com/news/topnews.php?id=16966" Just a little over 24 hours since the horror community started speculating about what Don Coscarelli was going to do next, based on cryptic updates from his Twitter account, all has been revealed. AICN was on the set of Coscarelli's John Dies at the End, the filmmaker's next venture. The project is based on the David Wong-penned book and Coscarelli snatched up the rights to it back in 2008. Paul Giamatti, Clancy Brown, Chase Williamson and Rob Mayes star. Giamatti is also producing." Well, looks like, as Dustin said, Phantasm V, it ain't. But there's always that secret project, though.

Oh well, I guess I can live with this news. John Dies at the End was a phenomenal book. I for one am definitely looking forward to the film!
I'm still waiting for the epic cut of the original Phantasm. IMHO, the sequels could never quite capture the magic of the first film. Not that they were bad or that I didn't enjoy them, because believe me, I absolutely loved them. There was just something very unique and special about that first film. If I could get an epic Phantasm cut and Jim The World's Greatest on DVD, I'd be a happy camper.

I thought for sure it was going to be Bubba Ho-Tep since the last tweet from Don (or whoever is posting tweets for Don) was "Grammy winner Angus Scrimm an Elvis fan? Who would've thunk?"...Oh well, at least I didn't have to wait as long as I did to see KISS without make-up back in the 70's...But I do like Paul Giamatti. I thought he was hysterical in Howard Stern's movie Private Parts and Planet of the Apes 2001.

I would love to see a Phantasm V but I'm almost more excited to see a non-sequel Coscarelli flick. And really I'm just glad the man is working again. It's been 8 years since the awesome Bubba Ho-Tep and I wasn't the hugest fan of Incident.
This, I am insanely excite about!!!

Hate to say I warned you about not getting the P5 hopes up, but... I pretty much warned against getting the P5 hopes up.
Don't be too disappointed, though. That secret Phantasm is, for better or worse, still very alive. They've done way too much on it to bury it now. You will see it some day, but Phantasm V it ain't. There are other Phantasm projects sizzling at this very moment as well. Our fave franchise is far from dead!

I think it's the right move.
From a creative standpoint, doing something new will bring a fresh perspective (as Dustin is alluding to) to anything Phantasm, that might lie ahead.

[scratches head]
Has it really been 8 years since Bubba Ho Tep? Good grief.
Anyways, the el secret-o Phantasm project is still in the slow cooker, so not all is lost. I hope that JDATE gets a good theatrical release, it looks like a pretty cool, far out flick.
But in other news, Phantasm Oblivion is still an amazing movie, and it's never over...
