Hey Dustin,
Thanks for the comment above about my little gag with The Jerk; I admit I wasn't quite as excited to get Phantasm Exhumed as Navin was to get the phone book, but was very, very glad nonetheless!
I did get a little bit of time over the weekend to begin the book, and got through the first chapter on Jim the World's Greatest and Kenny & Company, and got part of the "Morningside" chapter tackled as well so far. Of late I'm much slower with my reading than I used to be, as I am buried in reading and grading essays darn near constantly, seeing how I work at no fewer than four colleges and have over 200 students at any given time, but I will be working my way through your opus little by little as time permits. It may be slow going for the reason that I like to spend time with books I am really interested in, too, rather than simply blowing through them really quickly.
So far the biggest surprise I've run across is the mention of and photographs of the ice cream shop in Alhambra that was the setting for a deleted scene from the original film. I turned the page and spotted those two photos of shop, and my brain went into overdrive...wait...a...minute....hey! I've been in that shop! Several years ago I went into that very same ice cream parlor, and didn't even know it had any sort of connection to Phantasm; I just went there for ice cream!
Anyway, good stuff so far, and major thumbs up to you for your hard work and dedication!

A little late to the party, just ordered my copy, can't wait! Just wondering Dustin, is there gonna be a color pdf version available for all of us who purchased the book? It will be a separate purchase. It's looking like the Kindle eBook isn't going to hold 270 photos, so my way of making up for that is offering it in color and offering alternate photos that aren't in the paperback version so Kindle Readers don't feel too left out on the photo front. The text will be the same, however. Glad everyone is receiving their copies and liking it so far! Loving all the Exhumed selfies I'm seeing on Facebook!

If anyone hasn't gotten yet but wanted to see more of the cool pics contained inside, check some out at Fangoria: I love these shots! The Tall Man one is so iconic and the one of Father Meyers trying to use the phone with a severed ear cracks me up.

Book arrived, read it over a pint of ice cream as I felt like doubly treating myself. I skipped a bit as there was some things I had burning curiosity about and yes, the book answered them although I'm curious now what made the Beastmaster production hell on earth as it's hinted about a few times and I didn't see the actual deal spilled.

Another couple items of surprise to me from the "Morningside" chapter:
1. The gates that are so iconic from the film are in Altadena/Pasadena, about ten minutes from one of my workplaces. I could go to those gates in just a very few minutes when I work in Pasadena on Tuesdays and Thursdays!
2. Additionally, the red planet scenes were filmed in Irwindale around the dry riverbed that's out there? I drive through Irwindale and over those rocks every Tuesday and Thursday, again...I didn't realize that's where they filmed that stuff! I guess I visit the home world of the Tall Man a couple of times a week and didn't even know it.

While partial to Bnn & Jerry's Americone Dream these days it was cookie dough ice cream as I just picked it up on a whim when running my father up to get his meds from the pharmacy and I thought it'd be nice to tuck in on the couch, turn on some white noise television and read the evening away. As mentioned I kind of jumped as I wanted to know about Avary's Phantasm as I remember the 'squees' of joy and then it seemed to kind of drop off the radar. The book gave some great insight into maybe that not being such a bad thing.
I read a lot of books about cinema and the process and Exhumed measures up to them for certain. I'm just so thankful it came out dead tree style rather than .pdf as I'm just enough of a Luddite to prefer wrapping up with a book rather than a tablet.

for the moment, i've skipped over the JIM, THE WORLD'S GREATEST section because it's been so long since i've seen the movie that reading anything about it would almost seem like a spoiler. will double back after my next viewing.
loving the thing so far!

My copy just arrived today! Wow! I'm gonna have to go see that movie based on a Ray Bradbury story now! I had also watched Kenny and Co. recently and noticed the "dummy" was kind of dressed like a certain someone.
Anyway, this is awesome! Can't wait to dig in more! Fantastic job , Dustin!

Mr. McNeil, I applaud you sir. Your book arrived on Monday and I finished it yesterday in work. What an engrossing read it was. Your detail made it seem like each chapter I was reading, we were in that moment of time together. I remember seeing commercials in July for Phantasm II but back then, not quite sure what it was. I also loved how you recognized that there's more to Phantasm than just our principal actors and Don. I now know the names of Kristen Deem, Guy Thorpe, Mark Shostrom, etc. Great job in establishing the phamily behind the family. I liked the Bill Thornbury/Mark Hammill connection, that Phantasm III accomplished as much as Phantasm II with less money and I think I appreciate Oblivion even more now that I've read your fantastic book. The only downside after reading your book is that now, my impatience in waiting for Ravager to arrive is even greater now!
Seriously, thank you for your book and I appreciate what you've given us phans.

Twogunbob, oh man - yeah, Avary's Phantasm was so awful. I mean matter-of-factly awful. So glad it never took off. I came close to actually printing a studio rejection letter in the book, but decided against it.
Spookyencounters, glad you dig it so far!
Cudacharger, cheers! I drank many a Dos Equis writing this book!
JBDMS, thanks! Something Wicked is a pretty good flick, even better book. I think that's where the "It's only the wind" came from.
Dosequisxx, WOW! What enormous praise. You're welcome. So glad you got to read about the enormously important contributions of folks like Kristen, Guy and Mark. They're all such wonderful people who have been sooooo often overlooked.

I got the book and has read the most about part V, III and IV. Will sooner read from the beginning untill part III. Wow, must this been fun to dig and write about -- and as a reader i find all the thoughts and the efforts the people put into the project, all the cool changes of the script and the final movie, is great to read about.
For phans this book really push everyone onto the second level of phanism.

Dustin,
While reading the latest issue of Horrorhound I noticed that they mentioned that your book was UK produced? Is this a typo considering my book says it was printed in Kentucky? And just a bit of curiosity: is Harker an imprint of Amazon?

Dustin, While reading the latest issue of Horrorhound I noticed that they mentioned that your book was UK produced? Is this a typo considering my book says it was printed in Kentucky? And just a bit of curiosity: is Harker an imprint of Amazon? Sharp eyes, Obliviongoon. No idea why Horrorhound mentioned the book was just for the UK. That was incorrect (though it is also being sold on Amazon UK). My book shows the printing in San Bernardino, California. Harker is not affiliated with Amazon. Very cool looking stake for the logo, yes? :-D How do you like the book?
