I'm like thinking backwards. In P4, Jebediah meets Mike and figures out he went the the dimension fork. So, later on, Jebediah travels through the dimension fork and comes back as the Tall Man, at which he is carrying a sphere. He spots Mike in the room, and then Mike backs into the portal. The Tall Man says, "And so it begins." At the end of P4, the Tall Man pulls the sphere out of Mike's head and goes through the portal. I'm thinking that back in Jebediah's office when "it is the hour", When the Tall Man comes through with the sphere, that that sphere is the one just pulled from Mike's head. Like the Tall Man traveled from the end of P4 to the part where he's back in the office with Mike and Jody... I don't know...I'm even comfusing myself. I can picture it all in my head, but I can't put in in words. i agree with this! how excellent!

I agree it was the best ending ever. Again I was blown away by it. I love that 70s flash back stuff and it fit right in so perfect. I thought they went right back to 1979, and Reg jumped through at that moment only because he saw Mike was dieing and to go back was the only way to save him. But, then how did Reg know where he would come out at when he jumped throught the forks? Maybe Mike was just thinking back as he was dieing and Reg has gone someplace we dont know about after the Tall Man? ...Maybe its what ever you want it to be ....untill P\/

Thats the greatest thing about this series. It is whatever you think happens and even then there are no clear cut answers.

I got the boxed set for christmas with all phantasms and I found the 4th the most confusing the ending anyways but it explained a lot about the tall man and how he came to be what he is, I guess he's not really an alien is he? I mean he was a human after all. Also after reggie went into the gateway where did he go? You hear his voice but that's it I'm kinda confused someone help me argh. Where did you get the boxed set? I have P1, P3, and P4 but I can't find P2 anywhere. I did see P2 on EBay for $40 on VHS but I would love to find the P2 DVD.

The ending definitely keeps you guessing, that is what is so great about these movies! I think Reggie went back after the Tall Man so he can put the orb back in Mike's head so Mike won't die... I think the Tall Man relalized that the orb was not going to be able to take over Mike so he was ready to give up on him, thusly not caring if he dies. I think he wants Mike to become the "new" Tall Man. I know it sounds very far fetched, and probably way off... just another theory!

Yeah I agree, the ending is really up to the viewer to decide what happened. Even though I thought part IV ended perfectly and tied together very well with the other films, I do look forward to seeing part 5 and maybe getting some answers about what happened. (Such as how did the sphere get in Mike's head) I thought it was a very beautiful ending since it makes you ask questions like "Was it a dream?" "Was it all in Mike's head?" "Did that really happen?" "Did Mike die?" "What happened to Reggie?" "Will Mike become the next tall man?" I did love the ending scene back in the 1970's when they were younger. It was very beautiful and haunting at the same time. "It's just the wind...it's just the wind..."

I have a theory for the end of this movie, and my friend and I go round and round on it--he thinks I'm crazy. At the end, when Reggie jumps through the gate, the camera really lingers on Mike--as if he's doing something. Now, we already know from the other events in IV that Mike can create dimensional forks. Who's to say he can't also create their destinations? I'm firmly of the opinion that Mike knew the fight was over and that the Tall Man won. He knew he was dying, and he knew Reggie was just going to get himself killed. So, out of love for his friend, he "tweaked" the gate a little bit. He sent Reggie back to that earlier time, before the Tall Man showed up. Back when things were normal and right. It was Mike's final gift to the friend who had given everything for him ever since he was a kid.

I just found out about P3 and 4 yesterday. There are a lot of interesting theories here about the end of P4 which just confused the heck out of me. IMHO, it all ties to the end of P1 where Reggie tells Mike that Jody died in a car wreck and that all he'd experienced was a dream. Then, in P4 after their final confrontation Jody tells Mike "I died in the car accident". And then the Tall Man telling Reggie, "It's in his head" leads me to conclude that everything was a delusion in Mike's mind. With the death of his parents and Jody, it was to much for his adolescent mind to handle. Why wouldn't a 13 yo think that he is obvioulsy next in line.
The only reality being 1978.
But it may all be moot since every movie begins by rewriting the end of the previous movie.

The idea of TTM carrying the sphere from Mike's head back into the Jeb's office is *BRILLIANT*~! As for REGGIE, I don't think there is a lot of thought behind his actions. He sees MIKE lying on the ground, and TTM is the cause of that. And since, TTM goes through the gate, REGGIE follows him. I doubt even REGGIE knows what his plans are. he's just going. Also - Someone else mentioned a thought I had earlier...maybe its not MIKE that is suffering the Phantasm Maybe its REGGIE....? I reckon I need to sit down and go through them again (Movies should have a beginning, a middle and an end, but as Godard said, "Certainly, but not necessarily in that order."

Here's the Phinal Battle: Reggie goes back through the gate and confronts Jebediah Morningside, before he turned evil. Reggie convinces Jebediah to help him. He explains how, after going through the fork , the horror he has inadvertantly caused, and tells jebediah all that he and mike have been through. Jebediah agrees to help mike and agrees that the evil HE alone is responsible for MUST be stopped! Reggie and Jebediah BOTH go back through the gate. Reggie helps mike, who is laying on the ground (from the last film). Meanwhile, Jebediah knows exactly where to go to confront his alter-ego, the Tall Man. Just as jebediah is about to go, the earth trembles in a massive quake. Storm clouds, lightning and thunder roar through the sky. Jody then appears and tells them that BOTH Jebediah and the Tall Man cannot exist in the same time and space. If they stay, the earth will certainly be destroyed! Just then, the Tall Man appears and confronts the three of them. Jebediah confronts the Tall Man and they exchange some words. The Tall Man calls upon his dwarfs and spheres to attack the three, for He too, realizes what will happen if Jebediah stays in this dimension. The two battle it out, where Jebediah realizes (after being severely wounded by the fight and attacked by a sphere) that the only way he can defeat the tall man and save the world is by getting BOTH of them to go through the gate together at the same time. In doing so, he will destroy not only the Evil he has created, but sacrifice himself as well. After one Phinal goodbye to Reggie and mike, letting them both know how sorry he is for creating this evil, Jebediah grabs hold of the Tall Man and, after a struggle, pushes him through the gate. The gate explodes! The spheres melt and explode, the dwarfs explode! All over the world, the spacegates explode and close up. Flash to the Red Planet...it too explodes! Has the Terror finally been defeated? It looks like it has. Reggie helps mike up and they both walk away into the rising sun of a new day. As the camera pans back to where the gate once stood, a charred, round silver sphere drops from the sky.... It moves slightly. Jody's voice can be heard saying..."It's finally over mike!"....another voice echoes in the distance...HEH, HEH, HEH......IT'S NEVER OVER! BOOOOOOOYYYYY!

Hi I'm the new guy here but I have a theory:
We know that TTM has a sphere in his head. The first question to bring this all together is how and why. Obviously he did not put it there himself. Ok, in P4 we learn that in the past Jebediah went through the fork, but as Jodi told Mike, Jebediah never did return. This means that he was killed and reanimated by someone with a sphere in his head. Now this someone must have also taught him the skills to make dwarfs and spheres. We know that the dwarfs are sent to the red planet as slaves so this would explain the TM's mission. He is actually in effect a slave himself to someone else.
OK now follow me here...we know that Mike has a powerful mind. Perhaps TTM at some point between P1 and P4(we cant be sure exactly when) put Mikes mind into the sphere and left it inside Mikes head for safekeeping because he wanted to be able to have Jebediah of the past come into the future (as in P4 at the end) and retrieve Mikes mind to have it available at the the time Jebediah first becomes TTM. Now why would he do this? Because he wants Jebediah to retrieve mikes mind/sphere and use it to fight the very people who enslaved him and made him TTM! Now this answers alot of questions, such as in P4 the flashback where the young Mike cuts TTM down from the tree after TTM promises to go away and never come back. This is because TTM knows that if he is successful at preventing Jebediah from becoming TTM he will change the future and TTM will absolutely go away and never come back because he will not have ever existed in the first place! The other question answered is so what happens at the end of P4? well Jebediah comes through the fork and retrieves Mikes mind takes it to the past we see him carrying the sphere through the old fork and sees Mike again and says "so it begins". He means so begins a new past and possibly a new future for everyone, himself included.
When Reggie goes through the fork at the very end of P4 it is TTM who is sending him back to the day before TTM came to their town. This is a full circle from the beginning part of P4 where they reminisce about the day before TTM came to town and how idealic that day was with Reggie driving the ice cream truck. The deal here is that we know TTM controls where the forks lead to. He is sending Reggie back to that day so that he and Mike can either plan a trap for TTM or else run away and save themselves. Perhaps TTM realizes that if he can not prevent himself from becoming TTM he can at least change the future and save Mike who he feels a special bond with.
Another quick point to bring up is that also in P4 when Jodi betrays Mike and Mike finds himself strapped to the table TTM is going to use a sphere with a saw to get at the sphere in Mikes head he says, don't worry this wont hurt a bit..ok maybe just a little. This shows his special attachment and fondness for Mike and also may show that he has first hand knowledge of how this feels when he himself had the sphere implanted in his own head and becomes TTM.
Thank you for reading and thinking about this......

Hi everyone! Someone above had said, and I agree....it's all in Mike's head! Mike's trauma over the death of his family has caused him to retreat into his mind and concoct this story...just sad that he never came up with a happy resolution

I like to think that Mike as we know him was dying and the transformation was nearing completion. In his agonizing pain, he remembered one of his happier moments. Also always dug the one about Reggie going back and stopping the Tall Man from exisiting.... therefor time went back to 1979. I always thought as you describe in your first paragraph, but I love the idea in the second! Reggie went back to whenever and prevented the Tall Man from existing, so we get to see a 1979 scene where the events of Phantasm never happened. And perhaps the "only the wind" voice is like a ghost of a memory from the alternate reality we see in the films. Very cool. Ravager will negate this possibility almost certainly.

In the beginning of part II Mike seem to be cured, before his fall back into old habits: the rest of the movie, together with part III.
At the end of part IV he seem to "let go", "die" and travel back to his childhood. Somewhat again become in harmony with things.
Part V will be, like in the beginning of part II, a second fall back into habits and it all start again.
The problem starts over and over three times: the start of part I, in part II and (probably) again a third time in part V.
How will it all END???!!!
