There is some speculation about the delay in a story posted on AintItCool. In the forum section above, set aside for the original film, there is a link to the story.

It's interesting that there's some pretty impressive mainstream power like JJ Abram's Bad Robot company behind this remaster and I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but if this rerelease of P1 is what's holding up Ravager, it's somewhat underwhelming news. Personally, as a huge "phan", I don't need nor do I really want a 3rd version of the original Phantasm in my collection. A 4K transfer from the original negatives, no matter how beautiful it may look, will still be the same movie.
There may be a market for this in the hardcore audiophile and videophile phans, but I don't know...this release seems counterproductive in putting Ravager on the back burners for this, IF it's even true. Personally, in order for me to consider purchasing it, those extras better be pretty d**n fresh and impressive and not just a rehash of the special features of the Anchor Bay release, which was already top notch, IMO. As I said, IF this is all true, this rerelease is what should have been put on the back burner.

Ive been waiting for a bluray of the original forever. And they are remastering in 4K and a new 5.1 hell yeah, there's a lot of happy plans over this news.

Aside from the 4K picture, how exactly will this 5.1 sound mix differ from the Anchor Bay release? I mean, didn't they tweak the audio for that? I'm genuinely curious how much better the sound can get than that DTS 5.1 surround track.
I'll admit, if this is part of some box set that has Phantasm: Lord Of the Dead and Phantasm: Oblivion on bluray too, it would most definitely be worth it.

We've waited 17 Years now, so it won't be hard just to wait a little longer. I'm very excited about the Restauration of P1, so I think that's absolutely worth it. Patience, my phellow Phans

gotcha. i'd like to say, though, that i haven't been waiting for 17 years; for me, PHANTASM was over and done with in 1998 (& despite this new chapter, it probably still is). it didn't occur to me to want more; i didn't need more -- OBLIVION was a beautiful ending to the saga.

I agree, Oblivion would be a good final film in my opinion if for some reason Ravager doesn't get released, but I'm sure it will after all that work on it.

RIP Angus...however, this final installment....is gonna be a great tribute to him....the 4K restoration will probably be used in Ravenger for flashbacks...that is why there is gonna be a bit longer delay...it is well worth it..

Had fun at Wonder Con, and let me confirm the following from different sources:
The film is complete..done finished...
The work print was test screened at the Egyptian in LA Calif...aproxx run time 2 hours and at that time it was a rough version.
The final film will be should run 90 mins.
Anchor Bay is in the mix for a "sphere set" of all five films.
Limited release..possible pairing with restored phan 1
5th one is great
