Sadly it came out on Tuesday and I still can't get it. My local Wal-Mart, Zellers, HMV, and Futureshop didn't get it in. HMV is willing to order it in for me but they're charging 26 bucks, I decided to wait because Futureshop will have it for 17, and Wal-Mart for anywhere between 12 and 15 whenever they get it in.
I take it the R1 DVD is pretty bare bones when it comes to special features? Any commentaries, trailers, behind the scenes, or deleted scenes included?

The only extra is the trailer. I call that a semi-victory in the extras department. But still, it wouldn't hurt Universal to include the 3 TV Spots (maybe as an easter egg).

Yes I also agree I'm glad that it's finally out. Maybe if it sells well Universal will release a 2 Disc Special Edition that includes the Theatrical Cut, the Workprint version, and special features like in Region 2.

That's what I've been saying! LOL! But I think a 2-Disc set isn't being fair to the single disc releases of I, III, and IV. Another thing is the inclusion of the workprint. Don't give your hopes up, but the workprint is POSSIBLY lost or destroyed. But if found, the deleted/alternate scenes could work as a Deleted Scenes section. This is how I see Universal's SE:
NOTE: These ARE NOT specs for the recent or any future Phantasm II release, it's all a speculation.
Tech Specifications: -Anamorphic 1.85:1 Widescreen (same transfer from the R1 release) -English 5.1 DTS -English 5.1 Dolby Digital -English 2.0 Original Stereo -Optional English, French, and Spanish Subtitles Special Features: -Audio Commentary with Don Coscarelli, James LeGros, Reggie Bannister, Angus Scrimm, and Paula Irvine -The Ball Is Back!: The Making Of Phantasm II (new documentary) -Greg Nicotero: The Gory Days -Deleted Scenes (IF the workprint is found) -Phantasm II: Behind-The-Scenes (16 Minutes of Behind-The-Scenes) -Theatrical Trailer and TV Spots
That can work if Don Coscarelli presented this to Universal.

Wait a tick, the workprint is lost or destroyed? I thought it was included in the Region 2 special edition? If it's included in the Region 2 special edition it would in theory have to be somewhere, or worse case scenario just rip it from the Region 2 version and port it.

The workprint was only available as a 2nd disc in a bootleg set, never officially released.

I never said the workprint was lost or destroyed (per se) it was just a guess. Lost, maybe. Destoryed, I don't think so. It's probably with Don Coscarelli or in the Universal vaults. I'm sure Dustin could shed some light on the subject.

I'm sure Dustin could shed some light on the subject. I would be happy to shed some light. A work print is a version of a film edited most often on videotape. Once the director, editor and studio (if involved) all agree on a work print, the exact same edits and cuts are then made to the negative, resulting in a positive film print, the kind ready for projection. This is why work prints are so often missing effects and music. If you've ever seen a work print, you've probably noticed that the quality is weak. Technically speaking, there's almost never a great looking work print. It's the nature of the format. I have good reason to believe that the deleted scenes from Phantasm II were never developed from the negatives beyond the work print. I've seen higher quality versions of these deleted scenes, better looking than the work print, and they still contain time code and aren't that great. Developing film is really expensive, so we shouldn't ever expect to see these scenes in pristine quality. It just wouldn't be cost-effective. Don could, however, if he was so inclined, include excerpts from his master work print of deleted scenes for the DVD. It wouldn't look spectacular, but it would be several grades above the current work print being circulated. And as for the Region 2 special edition that contains the work print, that's a bootleg. It's a great looking, well-packaged, packing heat in the supplements department bootleg, but a bootleg all the same. An official release would not use a third generation VHS work print. It would use a first generation work print, such as the recent Blade Runner SE from Warner Bros.

To MrsLeGros, yeah my Wal-Mart has it listed for $13.86 as well, but they didn't get it in. Nobody in my city got it in, however HMV who was willing to order it in for me but wanted to charge me $25.99. I said no, and I am just waiting for Wal-Mart or Futureshop to finally get it in.

I was shopping on amazon.com and saw a listing for P2 on DVD and had to come over to this board to double check. So I bought it.

I couldn't make my computer grab screen shots of region 1 and 2 of Phantasm II but I took this picture with my camera contrasting the two for those who were interested. Region 1 is on the right and definitely has the brighter transfer. ;D Attachments:
