pretty good article: THE STRANGE CASE OF PHANTASM RAVAGER Jon Lachonis May 20th, 2015 deathnerve.com
It’s been a long time since I saw the original Phantasm on its first theatrical run and in the years since then I’ve grown tired of explaining to people that a movie named Phantasm exists, along with three sequels, so imagine my surprise when over a year ago a teaser for a fifth and finale Phantasm wound up on Entertainment Weekly, of all places, along with the news that the film had been shot in secret and was, quote, complete.
In the more than thirteen months that have passed since that announcement, and tantalizing bit of footage, the hype for a fifth Phantasm has grown cold. What seemed like an initial marketing push for a film that was coming soon has become a foggy memory languishing behind a veil of un-information. The film, that Aintitcool news had promised us would come sooner than we think, seems stalled, with the latest word from Texas Frightmare, where new bits of footage were revealed, being that the film was actually still in post-production and no distribution deal had been achieved.
As a Phantasm fan, my excitement for the fifth and final film is still running hot, but like many fans I’m left wondering: what went wrong?
It seems illogical to launch a teaser through major media outlets for a film that won’t be released for over a year, and stranger yet to allow the dead air between announcements linger with emptiness. Worse yet, the background for the film—originally conceived as a web series then hobbled together into a feature—makes us fans wonder how serious the creators were about bringing the film to fruition in the first place.
Phantasm has a rabid fan following, but it is small to be sure. The franchise always seemed to be operating well below its potential after the flawless first film dragged us through a surreal and inexplicable horror landscape, and opportunities to update the franchise, whether you like remakes or not, have been strangled by red tape. Creator Don Coscarelli has continued to put the loyalty of the fans above any and all business opportunities, remaining fiercely independent where the legacy of his masterpiece is concerned.
The bottom line is something clearly went wrong, and the worst fear you could imagine is that the problem is the film itself. If Coscarelli and new director David Hartmen have really spent a year in post-production, the chances of the problem being the film are increased considerably. Even if the issues are more mundane—funding, rights issues, disinterest amongst potential distributors—things don’t look good.
As it stands today, thirteen months after its announcement, the final Phantasm has no release date, isn’t complete, and apparently no distributor. Phantasm V: Ravager will surely get released eventually, but at this point could it possibly live up to the anticipation? If not, what a sad way to close the book on the Phantasm experience.deathnerve.com/the-strange-case-of-phantasm-v-ravager

i've speculated for a long time one of the reasons it still isn't finished may be that they're aware of the film's weaknesses and are trying to compensate instead with mounds of after-the-fact "spectacle". my expectations are very low, which may end up working for it when they finally push the thing out the door.

I hope this is really the last one with a definitive ending, which is the only reason why I'm so invested in it. There's no need for a Part 6 or for a speculative/open ending, it's over, just make this the last one and officially end it there with closure.

DaveH • 20 days ago I think you're letting your PhanBoy frustration get to you. The film will be out soon and will definitely be worth the wait. is worth some speculation is a comment at the deadnerve site

pretty good article: The bottom line is something clearly went wrong, and the worst fear you could imagine is that the problem is the film itself. Maybe it's surprisingly hard to find a company releasing it and distribute a very obscure indie horror movie no one have heard of, especially part 5 (!), and to a film company this film might look VERY random and commercially impossible to see any money in. Maybe they're back to the cutting table trying to cut it more fit for anyone to find any deal at all, but the actual material more or less makes this impossible. In the end, it will be out, but might take several years as things tend to cool off and only get harder and harder. Who knows.

I have some information about what is going on. Not sure if I should post about it, as I am a big phan and don't want to spoil things...

EDIT: Having just read an update from Gigi Bannister on the Ravager FB page which might be about the same thing, I realised the wording of my comment was (purely by ignorance and chance) unfortunate, so I've removed it.

I am sorry to hear Hartman is in the hospital. this might delay the project to next year...I did talk to reg/GG at SDCC and they indicated they are still in post -probably syncing the score and sound effects.I heard from another source that Don did receive a distib offer but turned it down. I don't have a problem releasing it when it is READY...look it took over 10years for the mad max fury road to come out..and that was worth the wait...if I had to guess its 95% done...
