I have read good things about Diary, have any of you seen it? If so, what's your take?

Being the huge Romero fan that I am, I simply could not wait so I went out and bought DIARY at midnight and just finished watching it.
Maybe with more viewings I won't feel so negatively toward the film, but I can safely say that it's easily the worst in his series. And even though I say that, I still say that it's a lot better than most everything else being put out in the zombie genre these days. There are a lot of gripes I have with DIARY though, and I honestly went into it with an open mind. The acting is atrocious... it seriously takes you out of the whole thing it's so bad. Not to mention that the whole technology shtick quickly became annoying and VERY unrealistic. But probably most painful of all is that Romero spoon feeds the audience the social and political commentary with a f**k**g shovel, as opposed to how his classic films do it. In particular, DAWN is chock full of commentary on various social issues, but it doesn't slap you in the face every 5 minutes and say "hey this is a comment on this and that in our society" the way DIARY does.
I love George Romero... probably more than anyone here... but sadly my hero has missed the mark on this one. That being said, it isn't an unwatchable film by any means. There is a lot to love about DIARY in fact. It's just not a special movie in any way at all.

I will have to check it out. So far my least favorite Romero film is Day of the Dead. I think that is was incredibly boring. The setting in an underground bunker was just blah. The overbearing commander was a bit too much as well. Land of the Dead was questionable to say the least.

For me, the order of the films is very easy...
DAWN DAY NIGHT LAND DIARY
Hopefully Romero will pull out one more "classic" in his day. I know he's more than capable.

Do you like his other films? Monkeyshines is currently one of my favorite horror movies.

I do enjoy his other films... The Crazies, Martin, and Creepshow especially. Bruiser was a letdown, though. Monkey Shines is actually not too bad either, I agree.

Martin is a masterpiece to me. A great movie, probably his best non-Dead film.
I enjoyed Bruiser a lot. Not his best by a mile but very underrated.

Anyone seen Martin? Great vampire flick of his. Didn't mind diary too much, although far from my favourite.

I love it. I currently own the Lionsgate DVD but want to pick up the OOP Anchor Bay version due to the Lionsgate version being improperly matted despite being filmed in full screen. With the newer release, you lose some of the top & bottom picture. Bah! Still a decent release though. This page explains it better: home.comcast.net/~axlish/martinvideo.htm

Where did you pick up your DVD version? I know I can probably order it online, but I ask because I've never seen it in any stores. Very underrated in my opinion. John Amplas is great, and it's really neat to see him in DAY as well.

Oh goodness... www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/12343It looks like the "powers that be" are looking to make a sequel to DAWN. As much as I like Tony Todd (his portrayal of Ben in the NIGHT remake is classic), I don't think any of this sounds good. Get Ken Foree back in there, get George at the helm, toss out the CGI, and then we'll talk. Obviously though the best case would be to not touch this beloved cinematic gem.

I didn't even know Lionsgate put out a new version until I stumbled across it. It was about $12 or so.

I enjoyed Diary of the Dead despite its flaws. Tha acting was pretty bad but didn't really bother me a whole lot because I didn't expect this to be well acted like Dawn or Day. The effects were s**t....well not the practical effects they used & the make-up. Those aspects were pretty good. The freaking CGI. It was so obvious & that really brought the movie down for me. I hate CGI in horror movies...and in general for the most part. It's ok when used when all else fails & when a film doesn't rely on CGI to carry it. Still, I thought Diary was pretty good. I wasn't disappointed since I was drawn right into the movie right when it began. My favourite character was Professor Maxwell. There was just something about him I liked. Perhaps it was the mystique surrounding him. And he was great with the bow & arrow. I chuckled at Samuel & enjoyed him as well.
I wasn't expecting another Romero masterpiece. His last masterpiece was Day of the Dead. The movies he released after then were good but no masterpieces. I don't expect any masterpieces in the dark & dreary world of modern horror. Sure, we'll get some entertaining & good movies but nothing like the days of past. Diary of the Dead was a nice shining ray of light in a world full of modern horror crapfests. I'll take it over the 28 Days Later/28 Weeks Later drivel, Cloverfield, PG-13 horror remakes, & Rob Zombie turds any day of the week.
The DVD itself is filled with some special goodies. I picked it up in a K-Mart Exclusive bundle with the new Night of the Living Dead DVD for $25.

Well folks I was very dissapointed in Diary of the Dead. It had very unlikable characters in it. The plot was lousy. The only 2 out of the series that i like are the 1968 one and its sequel. Dawn of the Dead.

I consider myself an expert on Romero's zombie sags, and to me, DIARY was just not up to par. No, I don't expect any zombie film Romero makes to be gold like DAWN and DAY are, but he can do way better than this. I agree though, DIARY is leagues better than most other horror movies that come out these days.
I could go on for pages about this, but I'll cut it short for now.

I know a lot about Romero's "Dead" & other films but I don't consider myself an expect. I don't really consider myself an expert of anything.
